Santa Lucia de Tirajana is an agricultural town, with weekly markets. As such it is not a resort; bars and restaurants do cater for tourists, and are all extremely friendly, but their main business is with their regular local customers. This means that the food is superb, proper tapas for example, not the bland emasculated pap served up by tapas bars in the UK. The town is very pretty, and there is easy access to open country with a number of interesting walks starting and finishing there. It is a long drive to the beach (not in distance but the roads are very mountainous and slow), so if you want sun sand and sea don't bother. If however you want to stay in a real working town in the Canaries, and you love the countryside, birds and plants, this is a place you must consider.
